Abstract

THE USE OF PALM WASTE AS THE MAIN MATERIAL TO MAKE CARBOXY METHYL CELLULOSE BY ETHERIFICATION METHOD TO ENCREASE THE QUALITY OF CLEANSING MILK. Carboxy Methyl Cellulose (CMC) is additive material having function as stabilizer, thickener, adhesive and emulsifier, it can be produced from many kinds of plantation or agriculture waste that contains cellulose. Palm waste is one of waste that has potention as cellulose source. The purpose of this research is to make CMC using etherification process to palm waste. This process is done by using Natrium Chloroacetate (14, 20, 26, 32 g) and the time (2, 4, 6, 8 hours). The best CMC characteristic is obtained from etherification using 26 g Natrium Chloroacetate by the time 8 hours, that is 32.8 g CMC with 0.83 DS, the purity 88.8%. This CMC is applied on making cleansing milk to get the optimum condition of CMC amount (1, 2, 3, 4 g) and the length of stirring time (30, 60, 90, 120 minutes) to get the most stable cleansing milk emulsion. The best emulsion stability (100%) of cleansing milk is obtained by additing 4 grams CMC and the stirring time 120 minutes.

Key words: Palm waste, etherification, CMC, cleansing milk.
