Abstract


This study aims to compare the effectiveness of guided discovery model in scientific approach and scientific approach in terms of (1) concept comprehension ability; (2) student self-confidence. This quasy experiment used one experimental group and control group. The study population is all students of class VIII SMP N 3 Purworejo consisting of 7 classes. The sample of the study were class VIII A and VIII B taken randomly. Class VIII A is treated with a scientific approach. Class VIII B is treated with a guided discovery model in a scientific approach. Instruments to measure the ability of concept comprehension is question description, while to measure confidence using questionnaires. Data analysis includes proportion z-test for one sample and two sample. Based on hypothesis test using α = 5%, it can be concluded that: (1) learning with guided discovery model in an effective scientific approach in terms of students conceptual and confidence ability; (2) learning with an effective scientific approach in terms of student self-confidence, but not effective in terms of the ability to understand the concept; (3) learning with guided discovery model in scientific approach is more effective than learning with scientific approach in terms of conceptual understanding ability; and (4) learning with a guided discovery model in a scientific approach is no more effective than learning with a scientific approach in terms of self-confidence. For both variables studied, the highest increase occurred in the classifying aspects by characteristic and never give up.
