Abstract

Statistics is considered a difficult subject by most of the students in which the learning outcomes are less satisfactory during the last three years. Based on observation, the inadequate learning resources has been a prominent obstacle during the learning process. This study aimed at describing (1) the problems faced by students in statistics course; (2) the needs of learning materials in statistics courses; and (3) the learning materials that can be developed related to the students’ needs. This research employed Research and Development method referring to the development model proposed by Dick and Carey, namely ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation) which was completed in two stages of research. Here, the study was limited on the analysis stage or needs analysis phase (need assessment). The data collection techniques used interviews, observation, and questionnaires. The obtained data were scrutinized with quantitative and qualitative descriptive analysis. From the research data, it can be concluded that (1) 83.33% of the students still found it difficult to comprehend the statistical course due to the numerous formulas and data that make them hard to apply it; (2) the availability of the learning materials was still inadequate and had not been able to facilitate students’ autonomous learning; and (3) it is necessary to develop instructional materials based on the students characteristics to support their competence in statistics course in order to facilitate them to learn independently, i.e. in the form of module for realistic approach-based statistics.
Keywords: needs analysis, learning material, statistics.
