Abstract


This research aims to know conceptual understanding of male-students of class VII in mathematical problem solving according to the Polya stage on the subject of the quadrangles. This research is a qualitative-descriptive. Subjects of the research were two male students in the middle group. Data collection techniques in this research are written tests and interviews. The validity of the data uses the time triangulation, which is checking data at different times until it can be complete the lack of data that has been obtained previously. Data analysis techniques were carried out in 3 stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this research are: profiles of conceptual understanding of male students in completing mathematical problem solving according to the Polya stage well in understand the problem and planning a solution. Male students can gather facts by mentioning things that are known and asked, mentioning the characteristics according to the concept, knowing which ones are examples and not examples of the problems given, explaining the steps outline strategies in solving problems, presents the concept of quadrangles in the form of mathematical representations, but it has not been able to relate the formula to what is known from the given problem, it is not appropriate to apply the concept or algorithm to the quadrangles, making conclusions in giving confidence with little doubt on the answers already obtained.
