The study aims to determne the problem solving ability of male students of medium cognitive toward material relation function. Subjects in this study are students of class VIII SMP Negeri 2 Bae Kudus semester 2 year lesson 2017/2018. Subjects were taken by two male students in class VIIIC. Data collection techniques in this study using the method of interview and written test that is in the form of item description. The validity of the data using triangulation method, by comparing the data writen test and interviews obtained at different times. Data analysis technique is by 3 stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion.The analytical framework was developed by the researchers by following the stages of problem solving according to the Gagne Polya. The result of this study are: Student problem solving ability with cognitive men is solving problem solving activities well in the step of planning the problem and implement the plan. Male students are able to subsidize data on concepts that are well known, but have not been able to write down what is known and what is being asked. Male students do not realize the importance of interpreting the problem first and summarize the outcome of the problem. In implementing problem solving ablities, male students directly on solving the problem provided. From the result of the result of the studenr’s research is very good in implementing problem solving ability at step executing plan.
