Abstract


The purpose of this research was to describe the effectiveness of metacognitive strategy in mathematics learning according to the motivation to learn and mathematical concept comprehension of tenth grade students. Metacognitive strategy in this research was applied through these activities: (1) planning; (2) monitoring activities during learning; (3) evaluating. This experiment research was designed with one-shot case study and one-group pretest-postttest design. The population of this research were tenth grade science students of SMA Negeri 1 Godean which has four classes. X-Science-2 was selected randomly as the sample. The instruments in this research to collect data were motivation of learning quistionnaire, mathematical concept comprehension test, and observation sheet. The data were univariat analyzed using one sample t-test, paired samples t-test, and single sample proportion test. The result of data analysis using the significance level of 5% can be concluded that: (1) metacognitive strategy was effective according to the motivation to learn of tenth grade students in SMA Negeri 1 Godean; (2) metacognitive strategy was ineffective according to the mathematical concept comprehension of tenth grade students in SMA Negeri 1 Godean. Here were the things that caused metacognitive strategy to be ineffective according to the mathematical concept comprehension: (1) there were some obstacles in the implementation of this research; (2) there were differences of awereness about metacognitive strategy for each student; (3) student worksheet which was designed to develop the students’ mathematical concept comprehension could not work optimally.
