THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WAYANG PURWA PERFORMANCE

Abstract


The Javanese puppet show or Wayang Purwa performance is a moral, etic, or character performance. It realzes the energy of love and power derived from Ramayana and Mahabharata. It is the symbol of the human life journey in the world to the eternal life unites with God, the Creator. It is pictured by a series of Gendhing Patalon; those are: Cucur Bawuk, Pare Anom, Sri Katon, Suksma Ilang, Ayak-ayak, Srepeg, and Suwuk Pancer. It is aslo pictured by the performance from pulling out the Gunungan until the implants of the Kayon that can be concluded as: Limbukan, Perang Gagal, Gara-gara, Perang Kembang, Perang Lakon, and Tayungan. It uses a series of the pathet of Gamelan, namely: Slendro 6, 9 and Manyura; or Pelog 5, 6 and Barang; also a series of Javanese life attitudes, namely: distantion, concentration, and representation. So the puppet show is not only a physical performance but moreover as a guidance performance.
