Serat Wulang Reh (SWR) is one of New Javanese literature works which is full of the noble values. Its Nobility lies on the content and its literary purpose. This letter written by Sri Susuhunan Pakubowono IV contains advice that is intended to his sons and daughters. Its form is in Macapat Song lyrics.

Although originally it was intended to give guidance to the lives of the King’s sons and daughters. However, because of the directness of language, the simplicity of content and presentation, this pitutur luhur ingagesang is also used as a way of life by general people outside the palace walls. Even the other advantage as of one of the three well-known letters in this era (Serat Wedhatama, Serat Tripama),it is easily memorized by many people, and is still relevant to the present era.

Some valuable advice is very well-known up-to-now, including the concept of adigang adigung adiguna; dadia lakunirèku, cegah dhahar lawan guling, lan aja kasukan-sukan, panggawe becik puniku, gampang yèn wus dèn lakoni, angel yen durung kalakon,, and many others.

Qualitative descriptive study with a holistic approach and eclectic methods toward this letter results in a more comprehensive understanding. This analysis was conducted to get more detailed understanding toward the findings of its contents, such teaching choose teachers; choose the association; distinguish between good and bad; no character adigang,adigung,adiguna; teaching devoted to God,parents,teachers, siblings or older; teaching controlling lust; high and low teaching of manners; teachings being ‘accepted’; how ‘devoted’ to the Queen; etc. All can be explained as valuable advice and example of strategic value in the character formation.
